Résumé :

The main objective of my thesis is to conduct an in-depth study on the use and impact of smartwatches on users’ motivation and well-being. This research aims to explore and analyze the potential effects of these wearable devices on individuals’ overall motivation levels and well-being. Specifically, the thesis examines how the various features and characteristics of smartwatches—such as activity tracking, goal-setting, notifications, and health monitoring—can influence users’ motivation and well-being in different aspects of their lives, including physical activity, health-related behaviors, productivity, time management, stress levels, and quality of life.
By starting with semi-structured interviews to collect data from smartwatch users, I have gathered numerous valuable insights. This study has revealed several aspects, notably the presence of smartwatches in users’ daily lives, how they are used, and in some cases, how they are abandoned. In other words, the trajectory of these technological devices in users’ lives has been highlighted. The study also helps better understand how smartwatches influence motivation and well-being in a Middle Eastern country like Lebanon. The findings shed light on the potential advantages and disadvantages of using smartwatches as motivational tools, as well as their overall impact on users’ psychological and physical well-being. Furthermore, the study compares different types of users based on Rogers’ innovation theory.
This research could have many practical implications. Users would gain a better understanding of the impact of smartwatches on their motivation and well-being, helping them make more informed decisions about their use. Additionally, developers could leverage these insights to optimize the design and features of smartwatches, ensuring they adequately meet users’ needs in terms of motivation and well-being.
